EV Charging Times Explained

How fast your electric vehicle (EV) charges depends mostly on the outlet/connection, though the charger itself also affects the time it takes. There are three types outlets/connections, listed below from slowest to fastest.

  • Level 1 (120V household outlet) – 8-12 hours for 100% charge
  • Level 2 (240V household outlet) – 3-5 hours for 100% charge
  • Level 3 (DC fast-charging) – 30-50 minutes for 80% charge

On a daily basis, you’ll likely be using Level 1 or Level 2 charging. Most homes and garages have a couple of 240V outlets for heavy-duty power tools and appliances. However, if you only have access to a 120V outlet, simply plugging it in when you go to bed will either max out your charge or give you enough charge to last a few daily commutes. Level 3 chargers are what you see at refill stations in public places. They involve lots of special equipment to charge as quickly as they do, which makes them expensive to install in your home. We recommend just installing a Level 2 outlet if you opt to get any electrical work done at all.

Plug-in Hybrid Charging Times

Since plug-in hybrids (PHEV) only operate as fully electric part of the time (and have a much smaller all-electric range), they have smaller battery packs. Smaller battery packs charge more quickly than larger ones. The time is takes to charge is always less, but the difference between EV and PHEV charging rates is lower the higher the charging level is.

  • Level 1 (120V household outlet) – 3 hours for 100% charge
  • Level 2 (240V household outlet) – 1.5 hours for 100% charge
  • Level 3 (DC fast-charging) – 20 minutes for 80% charge
